A town centre in the middle of a rebuild
Stockport has changed a lot in a short time. Stockport Exchange beside the railway station brought new office floors and a hotel. Redrock added leisure and food to the top of Merseyway. The Underbanks have been steadily restored, bringing small businesses and independents back into buildings that had been empty for years. Weir Mill and the riverside sites have added residential and mixed use alongside.
For a cleaning contract that means two different jobs under one postcode. The new office stock at the Exchange is conventional: carpet tile, tea points, a shared core, an evening clean. The restored buildings in the Underbanks are anything but conventional, with stone stairs, timber, split levels and rooms that were never laid out for an efficient cleaning round.
Ground, stairs and access
The topography is a genuine factor here. The town drops sharply from the market towards the river, and buildings follow it. Addresses on Little Underbank and Lower Hillgate step down through several half levels. A 2,000 square foot tenancy spread across four of those levels takes longer than the same area on one floor plate, and any honest quote says so.
Lifts are uncommon in the older stock. Machinery for carpet extraction or hard floor work has to be carried, which affects both the machine we bring and the time it takes. We check this at the site visit, because it is the single most common reason a periodic job overruns.

There is a good spread of healthcare premises across the borough, on Wellington Road, out towards Heaton Moor and Cheadle, and in converted properties near the town centre. Those sites do not want an office specification. They want a room by room cleaning schedule, colour coded equipment, a written spillage procedure and a signed record of each visit that the practice manager can put in front of an inspector.
